Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Luanda, Angola, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
The summit is expected to bring together African leaders and key stakeholders to discuss strategies for resolving conflicts and promoting lasting peace and stability across the continent.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Shettima will deliver President Tinubu’s address at the summit.
He will present Nigeria’s position on the issues under discussion and reaffirm the country’s commitment to promoting peace and stability across Africa.
The extraordinary AU session is expected to focus on practical measures to address regional security challenges and strengthen Africa’s collective mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution.
Nigeria, which has historically played a significant role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution across the continent, is expected to contribute to discussions on improving existing mechanisms for preventing conflicts, resolving disputes and sustaining peace.
The summit comes amid persistent security challenges in several parts of Africa, including armed conflicts, terrorism and political instability.
Shettima will join other African leaders and stakeholders to explore ways of strengthening cooperation and developing practical solutions to the security challenges facing different regions of the continent.
The Vice President is accompanied by senior Nigerian defence and security officials, highlighting the summit’s strong focus on peace and security.
Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his engagements in Angola.
