The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing and commissioning the 284-kilometre Kano–Katsina railway project by December 2026, despite earlier challenges involving insecurity, land disputes and the rainy season.
The assurance was given during a joint inspection of the project involving officials from the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Federal Ministry of Finance, lending institutions and the project contractor.
Officials said the project is currently 80 per cent physically complete. The inspection also included a test run of the completed railway track from Kazaure to Katsina.
The Director of Rail Transport Services, Habibat Buhari, who represented the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Funso Adebiyi, said the project remained on schedule despite some setbacks.
She explained that the rainy season had slowed construction slightly but noted that substantial progress had already been made. She added that materials needed for the remaining track-laying work had been stockpiled at the project camp.
According to her, the two major challenges affecting construction are insecurity along some parts of the railway corridor and disputes over land and canal areas.
She said security concerns had disrupted activities in certain locations, while some communities were yet to accept provisions relating to the Land Use Act.
However, Buhari assured that the challenges would only cause temporary delays and would not prevent the project from being completed.
The government is also engaging affected communities and other stakeholders to resolve the land disputes and allow contractors to continue work in the affected areas.
Buhari expressed confidence that the December 2026 commissioning deadline would be met, adding that efforts were underway to ensure the necessary trains and other rolling stock arrived in time for the commissioning.
