Security forces have rescued 10 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were abducted by suspected kidnappers in Kogi State.
The victims were rescued from Egume Forest in Ofu Local Government Area following a joint operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, military, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security and auxiliary personnel.
The 10 corps members were among 15 NYSC members kidnapped last week while travelling from Abuja to Bayelsa State. The kidnappers reportedly contacted some of the victims’ families and demanded a ransom of ₦20 million for each corps member.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Kogi State Police Command said the rescue operation was coordinated, sustained and intelligence-driven.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, said the operation was aimed at securing the safe release of the victims, dismantling criminal networks operating in the area and bringing those responsible for the abduction to justice.
She said the operation was still ongoing, with security forces intensifying efforts to rescue the remaining abducted corps members and apprehend the perpetrators.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, commended the police, military, DSS and other supporting agencies for their courage, professionalism and resilience.
He also praised residents of the affected communities for providing timely and credible information that contributed to the success of the operation.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant and to report any suspicious movements or information that could assist security agencies in locating the remaining victims and arresting those responsible.
The Command assured residents that all available operational resources were being deployed to secure the safe recovery of the remaining victims.
It added that further updates would be released as soon as operational circumstances permitted.
