Greece has signed a $3.5 billion defence agreement with Israel to establish its first integrated, multi-layered air defence network, which is expected to be operational by 2029.
According to Israeli officials, the agreement was negotiated over three years and is one of the largest defence deals in Israel’s history.
The system will combine three Israeli-made air defence technologies: the SPYDER system, produced by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems; the BARAK MX system, manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries; and David’s Sling, designed to intercept a range of aerial and ballistic threats.
Greece’s Defence Minister, Nikos Dendias, said modern warfare had changed significantly, citing threats from ballistic missiles, drones, cyberattacks, satellite systems and other advanced technologies.
The new defence network is expected to protect Greece against aircraft, cruise missiles, large drones and ballistic missiles.
Separately, Greece has also signed a $30 million agreement with Israel to acquire Rafael’s Drone Dome system, which is designed to protect strategic locations from unmanned aerial vehicles and drones.
Greece is the second European Union member, after Finland, to agree to purchase the David’s Sling system.
The deal comes amid growing security concerns across Europe following the war in Ukraine and increasing tensions in the Middle East. Greece currently spends nearly 3.5 percent of its gross domestic product on defence, partly because of its long-running disputes with neighbouring Türkiye.
Israeli defence exports have also reached record levels, with official figures showing exports exceeding $19 billion last year.
