Brazilian football legend Roberto Carlos has denied reports that he converted to Islam following his marriage to Moroccan football agent Souhaila El Tahiri.
The former Real Madrid and Brazil star said he has the “utmost respect” for Islam, but clarified that reports claiming he had embraced the religion were false.
Carlos explained that he and El Tahiri held their wedding ceremonies in different forms to respect the religious beliefs of both families. His family members are Catholic, while his wife and some of their friends are Muslim.
The conversion rumors spread widely on social media after reports claimed that Carlos had recited the Shahada during a meeting with Sheikh Jihad Hamada, a prominent member of Brazil’s Muslim community.
Turkish lawmaker Ali Şahin also reportedly said he had been informed that Carlos had converted to Islam after meeting Hamada.
However, Carlos firmly rejected the reports, saying:
> “I have the utmost respect for Islam, and it is wonderful to see my wife praying, but the circulating rumors about my conversion to Islam are not true.”
Carlos said he and El Tahiri have been together for about two years after first meeting during a football-related business meeting.
The 53-year-old former Brazil international is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest left-backs. He enjoyed a highly successful career with Real Madrid and was part of Brazil’s 2002 FIFA World Cup-winning team.
