More than 200,000 people have been newly displaced across Sudan’s Kordofan region as fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has intensified.
The United Nations said the worsening conflict has also damaged vital water and electricity infrastructure, particularly in El Obeid, the region’s largest city.
The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) said displacement in the Sheikan district, which includes El Obeid, has increased by 25 percent over the past eight months.
Repeated fighting and drone attacks have damaged the city’s main power transformer, disrupting electricity needed to pump water, operate hospitals and maintain telephone services.
The humanitarian crisis is also worsening in other parts of Sudan. About 78,000 people have fled their homes in Blue Nile state, while around 18,000 were displaced in West Darfur during the first half of August.
In North Darfur, heavy rains and flooding have damaged nearly 1,350 homes and displaced more than 1,000 families.
The UN estimates that since Sudan’s war began in April 2023, about 59,000 people have been killed and 8.6 million internally displaced. More than 4.2 million others have fled to neighbouring countries, while around 33.7 million people need humanitarian assistance.
El Obeid has faced a prolonged siege, with RSF forces continuing attacks on villages and military and commercial vehicles around the city.
The city had a population of about 750,000 before the war, but authorities now estimate that its population has risen to around 3.4 million as people fleeing the conflict seek refuge there.
