Protesters Block Mokwa-Bida Highway Over Persistent Banditry

Commuters and motorists were left stranded after protesters blocked the busy Mokwa-Bida highway in Niger State on Sunday, demanding urgent action over persistent bandit attacks in the area.

The protesters reportedly blocked all major entry points into Mokwa, causing significant disruption to traffic and leaving many travellers stranded since Saturday night.

A protester, Saliu Mohammed, alleged that suspected bandits recently abducted 15 residents of the community. The claim could not be independently verified.

Mohammed also alleged that security agencies had yet to rescue the abducted residents, insisting that the protest would continue until the victims were released.

A commuter travelling from Ilorin to Abuja, Joy Amaechi, said she had spent about five hours in Mokwa as a result of the blockade.

She appealed to the government to intervene immediately and ensure the safe rescue of the victims.

Similarly, Henry Nwachuckwu, a driver with a popular mass transit company, said he arrived in Mokwa at about 7:00 a.m. on Sunday but was unable to continue his journey.

As of 10:30 a.m., the protesters were still occupying the highway, preventing motorists from passing through.

The development has renewed concerns over the worsening security situation along the Mokwa-Bida corridor and the impact of banditry on commuters and residents.
