Pakistan Supreme Court Orders Imran Khan’s Hospital Transfer

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the transfer of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days.

The three-member bench also ordered the formation of a medical board to oversee Khan’s treatment. The board is expected to include his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, and his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan.

According to Khan’s lawyer, Uzair Bhandari, the court also directed that Khan’s family be allowed to visit him in hospital and that he be permitted to communicate with his sons, who live abroad.

Khan is expected to remain hospitalised until at least September 16, when the court is scheduled to hear the case again. His transfer would mark the longest period he has spent outside prison since his imprisonment in August 2023.

The court’s decision followed a report from the Adiala Prison superintendent concerning a cardiac board’s assessment of Khan on August 10. The report noted fluctuating blood pressure and anxiety linked to restrictions on his contact with family members.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the court questioned the government’s advocate general over gaps in the medical report and expressed concern about Khan’s pulse, heart condition and the reported effects on his vital organs.

Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party welcomed the ruling, saying he needed independent and specialised medical care outside the prison.

However, government officials have maintained that Khan is receiving the best available medical treatment and that any transfer requires judicial approval.

The ruling comes amid a broader political standoff between PTI and the government, with the party making access to Khan a key condition for renewed talks. PTI has also announced a nationwide protest for September 27.
