Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunde Disu, has warned Nigerians against jungle justice and mob action, declaring that anyone who assaults or kills a suspect outside the law will face prosecution for murder.
Disu said the directive was aimed at curbing the growing cases of extrajudicial killings across the country. He directed Commissioners of Police in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to treat every case of mob action as homicide.
The police chief cited relevant provisions of the Criminal and Penal Codes, stressing that mob action cannot be justified as community justice.
He also warned that individuals who organise, encourage or facilitate mob attacks could face criminal prosecution. Those who mobilise crowds, record and circulate videos of attacks, or prevent police officers from intervening could also be held liable.
“I have directed all the Commissioners of Police in the 36 states of the federation including the FCT to treat every case of mob action as homicide,” Disu said.
The IGP said the police would conduct thorough investigations using forensic and intelligence tools and prosecute anyone found involved.
His warning followed the circulation of disturbing videos showing alleged mob attacks in different parts of Nigeria.
One case involved 25-year-old University of Jos graduate Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as Ibee, who was reportedly attacked in Jos on July 26 after being accused of stealing an iPhone 12. Police have arrested suspects in connection with the incident.
Disu urged Nigerians to hand suspected criminals over to law enforcement agencies and allow the courts to determine their guilt instead of taking the law into their own hands.
He stressed that there would be no exception for anyone involved in mob violence and that the police would ensure that justice was served.
