Several security personnel deployed for the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election have protested delays in receiving their election duty allowances.
Personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Fire Service and Nigeria Correctional Service reportedly returned from the election without receiving their full allowances.
Police personnel deployed from the Osun State Command, however, reportedly received ₦120,000 in two payments of ₦50,000 and ₦70,000 shortly after the election.
The NSCDC deployed 10,210 personnel for the election, including armed officers from several commands across the country. About 300 correctional officers, mostly from the Osun Command, were also deployed.
One NSCDC officer said personnel faced difficult welfare conditions during the operation. According to the officer, each member received ₦30,000 in cash for feeding before being deployed to various local government areas, but no further election allowance had been paid after their return.
The officer described the delay as discouraging, saying personnel worked under harsh conditions during the election.
The NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, attributed the delay to the verification of personnel records submitted by various state commands. He said payments had already begun and assured officers who were still waiting that they would receive their allowances.
Afolabi said the verification process was necessary to confirm the names of personnel who participated in the election before funds could be distributed.
Meanwhile, the Federal Fire Service, Correctional Service and Immigration Service confirmed that some of their personnel were still awaiting payment, although officials gave no immediate explanation for the delays.
The development has raised concerns over the welfare and timely payment of security personnel involved in election duties.
