The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has unveiled the names of his newborn daughter during a colourful traditional naming ceremony held at the Emese Court within the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The ceremony took place on Sunday evening, exactly one week after the safe delivery of the royal baby by the Ooni’s wife, Queen Oluwatosin Ogunwusi.
The event was attended by traditional rulers, palace chiefs, members of the royal family, custodians of Yoruba culture and tradition, dignitaries and well-wishers from across Nigeria.
The newborn princess was named Adelewa, Adeyele, Adeshikemi and Ayoade, Omo Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.
The names were formally announced by the Lowa Adimula of Ife, Oba Ademola Adeyeye, with the approval of the Ooni.
During the ceremony, prayers and royal blessings were offered for the child, with traditional Yoruba rites performed to formally welcome her into the House of Oduduwa.
The Lowa Adimula prayed for the princess to be blessed with wisdom, good health, strength, grace and long life. He also prayed that she would grow into a worthy representative of the royal dynasty and an ambassador of the Yoruba people.
Several symbolic items, including sugarcane, Aadun, honey, dried fish, money, a pen, bitter kola, kola nuts, alligator pepper, snails, schnapps, water, palm oil and doves, were used during the traditional ceremony.
According to the palace, the items symbolised prayers and wishes for sweetness, prosperity, wisdom, longevity, abundance, peace, knowledge, fertility, divine protection and a life of honour.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Ooni expressed gratitude to Olodumare for what he described as a precious gift and divine blessing to the House of Oduduwa.
He thanked God for preserving both mother and child throughout the pregnancy and delivery, attributing the safe arrival of the baby to the grace and faithfulness of Olodumare.
The monarch described the birth as a source of immense happiness to the royal family and a blessing to the people of Ile-Ife and the wider Yoruba race.
He prayed that his daughter would grow in wisdom, grace, honour, good health and divine favour, while living a life dedicated to purpose, service and excellence.
The Ooni also prayed for continued peace, unity, prosperity and progress in the ancient kingdom of Ile-Ife and for the preservation of the royal household and the House of Oduduwa.
He expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, palace chiefs, family members, friends and well-wishers who joined the royal family in celebrating the arrival of the princess.
