108 Attacks on Palestinian Journalists Recorded in July, Syndicate Says

Houthi Attack on Yemen’s Mocha Kills 7, Injures 30 — Military Seven people, including four military personnel and three civilians, were killed and 30 others injured after Houthi forces launched missile and drone attacks on the Red Sea port city of Mocha, the Yemeni military said. According to the military, the attack targeted military positions, civilian infrastructure and residential areas in Mocha. Yemeni air defences intercepted and destroyed 11 Houthi drones involved in the assault, the military said. Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah television broadcast footage showing the launch of ballistic missiles and drones. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the attacks targeted Saudi troop concentrations and weapons depots. The latest attack adds to growing regional tensions involving the Houthis and their military operations in the Red Sea region. Reuters reported that the Yemeni military confirmed the casualties in a statement issued early Monday.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has documented 108 attacks and violations against Palestinian journalists and media workers by Israeli forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank during July.

According to the syndicate’s Freedoms Committee, the violations included detentions, beatings, interrogations, restrictions on media coverage, and the confiscation or destruction of journalists’ equipment.

Brief detentions and restrictions on reporting were the most frequently recorded violations, accounting for 58 cases.

The committee also reported 11 attacks by Israeli settlers, including physical assaults, pushing and threats. Most of the incidents occurred while journalists were covering settler attacks and Israeli military operations in different parts of the occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces also reportedly used stun grenades and tear gas against journalists in 12 incidents, with some journalists suffering breathing difficulties.

Six journalists were beaten, while four sustained bleeding injuries while covering developments linked to Gaza, including injuries caused by shrapnel. Two journalists were detained and four were interrogated over their reporting.

The syndicate further documented raids on four journalists’ homes or media offices, including the closure of one media outlet. It also recorded three cases of journalists’ equipment being confiscated or destroyed, two incidents involving deleted footage, and two cases in which journalists were expelled from areas near Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate called for journalists to be allowed to carry out their work “free from threats, attacks and pursuit” and urged authorities to hold those responsible for the violations accountable.

The latest figures add to what rights groups describe as an unprecedented and increasingly deadly period for journalists covering the Israel-Palestine conflict.

According to rights groups cited by Al Jazeera, more than 270 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, while journalists have also faced widespread arrests and restrictions.

Al Jazeera said 12 of its journalists have been killed in Gaza since the start of Israel’s military campaign in 2023.
