One Killed, Five Injured in Shooting at Switzerland Rave Party

At least one person has been killed and five others injured after gunfire erupted at an overnight rave party in Aarau, northern Switzerland, police said on Sunday.

The shooting occurred before 3am local time near the annual Aarauer Rave, a techno event attended by about 3,500 people between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.

Police said the identities of the attackers were unknown and that a large-scale search operation was underway. Authorities have not yet established a motive or the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold told Swiss newspaper Blick that several shots were fired among a large crowd at the racecourse where the event was held. A witness reportedly described hearing bursts of gunfire.

Large parts of Aarau were cordoned off as police searched for the suspects. Authorities also increased their presence in surrounding areas as a precaution and appealed to members of the public to provide any photos or videos that could assist the investigation.

Switzerland has one of Europe’s highest rates of gun ownership, although shootings involving violence remain relatively uncommon. The country introduced stricter gun-control regulations in 2019.
