Nepali rescue teams have resumed efforts to reach hydropower workers believed to be trapped inside tunnels after devastating flash floods and mudslides struck the country.
The Nepal Army is using drilling machines, excavators, hydraulic cutters and other equipment to locate tunnel entrances at hydropower facilities, particularly the Trishuli 3A and 3B projects in Rasuwa District.
More than 100 workers are believed to remain trapped inside several flooded tunnels. At Trishuli 3A, rescue teams previously managed to break through part of a mud-filled tunnel, allowing them to pump air inside and send in a camera to search for survivors.
However, heavy rain and rising river levels temporarily disrupted the operation before conditions improved.
Nepal's disaster authorities said 734 bodies had been recovered, while at least 2,498 people remain missing in Nepal. Authorities also reported that 933 hydropower workers were among those missing.
The disaster began on Wednesday after part of a glacier in the Himalayas collapsed at an altitude of about 5,200 metres. The massive landslide sent rocks and debris into the Lende River, triggering a powerful surge that swept through several districts.
The Trishuli River reportedly rose by about nine metres within 30 minutes, destroying homes, businesses, roads and other infrastructure.
The United States, Canada, United Kingdom, European Union, United Nations and several other countries and organisations have pledged millions of dollars in humanitarian assistance.
Nepal has also requested specialist assistance from India and China to strengthen rescue operations.
Authorities warn that difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure and continued risks of flooding are complicating relief efforts. Nepal's finance minister has estimated that the disaster could cause economic losses exceeding $4 billion.
