North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile toward waters off its eastern coast on Thursday, according to South Korea's military, marking another missile test amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile was fired from the Wonsan area on the country's east coast at around 5 p.m. local time. The military added that it has strengthened surveillance and remains in close coordination with the United States and Japan.
Japan's Defense Ministry also confirmed the launch of what it described as a possible ballistic missile, noting that no damage or impact was reported within Japanese territory or nearby waters.
Pyongyang has continued to accelerate the development of its missile and nuclear programs since diplomatic negotiations with the United States collapsed in 2019. Analysts say North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is seeking greater international recognition of his country's nuclear capabilities while pushing for the easing of international sanctions.
In recent months, North Korea has conducted several weapons tests, including the launch of nuclear-capable cruise missiles and the unveiling of new naval assets. Kim has also emphasized expanding the country's naval strength, including plans to develop a nuclear-powered submarine and submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles.
North Korea has also strengthened military and political ties with Russia in recent years, supplying weapons and troops to support Moscow's war effort in Ukraine, according to international reports.
