Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked controversy after referring to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic Republic of Britain”, amid growing tensions between Israel and the UK government.
Netanyahu made the remarks during an Israeli podcast while criticising British media coverage of Israel. He sarcastically compared the UK’s current stance with its more supportive coverage of Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War.
He also referred to comments previously made by US Vice President JD Vance suggesting that Britain could become the first nuclear-armed “Islamist country.”
The comments drew strong criticism from Jewish organisations in Britain. Rabbi Charley Baginsky and Rabbi Josh Lev of the Movement for Progressive Judaism described the language as dangerous and irresponsible, stressing that Netanyahu does not speak for British Jews.
Former Downing Street chief of staff Gavin Barwell also condemned the remarks, describing them as “blatant Islamophobia.”
Relations between Israel and Britain have deteriorated in recent years, particularly since Labour came to power. The UK has suspended some arms export licences to Israel, imposed sanctions on far-right Israeli ministers and joined other countries in recognising a Palestinian state.
Experts say Netanyahu’s remarks could further damage relations between the two countries, although they may also have been aimed at strengthening his position among his domestic political supporters.
