Gunmen have abducted 14 passengers travelling along the Otukpo–Adoka Road in Benue State, with the police confirming that five victims have so far been rescued.
The incident occurred on Thursday night when an 18-seater commercial bus travelling from Enugu State to Abuja was ambushed along the Ankpechi–Omutele axis of Ohimini Local Government Area.
A resident, Ochai, said the gunmen forced all the passengers into the surrounding forest after attacking the vehicle.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident and said security operatives launched a coordinated rescue operation early Friday morning.
According to the police spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, the operation involved an exchange of gunfire between security personnel and the suspected kidnappers.
So far, five victims, including a four-year-old boy, have been rescued, while nine others remain in the custody of the suspected kidnappers.
One of the rescued victims sustained a gunshot injury during the operation and was taken to a medical facility in Otukpo for treatment.
The police said efforts had been intensified, in collaboration with other security agencies, to rescue the remaining victims safely.
The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Cletus Nwadiogbu, assured the victims’ families and the public that security forces would continue the operation until all the abducted passengers were rescued.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over insecurity in Otukpo and Ohimini Local Government Areas, where residents have recently reported a series of killings and kidnapping incidents.
