More than 2,000 people were evacuated from their homes in western Germany on Friday after a wildfire spread toward the village of Gey, near the Belgian border.
Residents were ordered to leave at around 4:00 a.m. and were directed to an emergency assistance centre at a nearby primary school. Authorities urged evacuees to take only essential belongings, identification documents and necessary medicines.
The fire remained critical, with flames reportedly advancing to within about 300 metres of the village. Local officials said one of the uncontrolled fires had also moved toward a former World War Two munitions depot near Dueren.
Unexploded wartime ammunition remains buried in parts of the surrounding forest, and firefighters reported hearing occasional explosions as the wildfire spread.
Around 300 hectares (740 acres) of land were burning. Two German army tanks were deployed to help firefighters clear difficult access routes through the forest.
Germany is currently facing dry conditions and an elevated risk of forest fires across large areas of the country.
