The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, over the alleged ritual desecration of the Holy Qur’an in Zuru Local Government Area of the state.
Musa, a resident of Rafin Mose Village in Zuru, was arrested over allegations including criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious books, the use of spells and hypnosis, and incitement to public disturbance.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, Bashir Usman, the incident occurred on August 9, 2026, at about 7pm in the Zango area of Zuru.
The police said preliminary investigations indicated that Musa allegedly acted in concert with two other suspects, identified as Rabi’u Tela, husband of Zarau Hassan, and Hamza Zango. The two suspects are currently at large.
Police alleged that the suspects dug a pit inside Zarau Hassan’s room and buried a copy of the Holy Qur’an alongside semen, white and red kolanuts, underwear, dead animals and other items described as fetish materials.
The command said the alleged act was intended to make Zarau Hassan “more submissive to her husband, Rabi’u Tela,” and warned that the incident could have triggered a breach of peace among Muslim residents of the community.
The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the two fleeing suspects, while Musa remains in custody and will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, condemned the alleged act and warned against actions capable of threatening religious harmony, public order and peaceful coexistence.
The police command assured residents that it would take decisive action, within the law, against individuals whose actions threaten peace and religious harmony.
