A devastating flash flood and mudslide along the Nepal-China border has killed at least 98 people, including 95 in Nepal and three in Tibet, while hundreds remain missing.
The disaster struck on Wednesday after a suspected 4.4-magnitude earthquake may have triggered an ice-and-rock avalanche on the Lhende Khola river. The resulting surge of mud and water swept through communities near the border, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Nepalese authorities say 484 tourists are missing, including 391 foreigners and 93 Nepalis. At least 85 army and police personnel are also out of contact. Nineteen bridges and about 40 kilometres of roads have been damaged.
Rescue teams from Nepal and China are searching for survivors, but heavy debris and rising water have made access difficult. Authorities have warned that another flood could occur because a blockage remains upstream on the Lhende Khola.
India, Sri Lanka and the European Union have offered humanitarian assistance, while the EU has activated its Copernicus satellite-mapping programme to support rescue and relief operations.
Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas and communities along rivers to move to safer ground as the search-and-rescue operation continues.
