N’Assembly Employs Over 14,000 Workers, Making It World’s Busiest Parliament — Clerk

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, has said the Nigerian National Assembly has more than 14,000 workers, apart from the 469 federal lawmakers and their visitors.

Ogunlana made the disclosure on Tuesday during the final phase of a capacity-building programme for legislative aides in the 10th National Assembly.

According to him, the large workforce, legislators and daily visitors make the administration of the National Assembly particularly demanding.

He also revealed that the Senate and House of Representatives had passed about 3,500 bills over the past three years, with the Senate accounting for 1,500 and the House 2,000.

The Clerk stressed the need for an efficient support system for lawmakers and renewed his call for a special salary structure for legislative aides.

He urged the National Assembly Service Commission and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to resolve issues surrounding the salaries and conditions of service of legislative aides.

Ogunlana noted that legislative aides play an important role in the lawmaking process but currently have temporary and non-pensionable appointments.

He called for reforms to improve their welfare and strengthen their capacity to effectively support lawmakers.
