The Sokoto State Police Command says it has killed two suspected bandits and arrested 11 other suspects during separate operations targeting banditry, motorcycle theft and other crimes across the state.
The operations, conducted between August 14 and 15, also led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, 54 rounds of live ammunition, two magazines, a locally fabricated pistol and 14 stolen motorcycles.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, security operatives responded to a distress call on August 15 over an attempted bandit attack on Dankadu Village in Illela Local Government Area.
Police operatives, supported by the Volunteer Constabulary and other tactical teams, engaged the attackers in a gun battle. The bandits reportedly fled into the forest with gunshot wounds, while a subsequent search led to the deaths of two suspects and the recovery of the weapons and ammunition.
Police said no security personnel or residents were killed in the operation.
In a separate operation, three suspects were arrested over an alleged motorcycle theft syndicate operating in Kwannawa and Tamaje areas of Sokoto metropolis. Five stolen motorcycles and a locally fabricated pistol were recovered.
Further investigations led to the arrest of additional suspects allegedly involved in motorcycle theft, extortion, forgery and receiving stolen property. Police said nine stolen motorcycles had been recovered in connection with the syndicate.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Hayatu Shaffa, commended the officers for their bravery and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
He also warned against buying stolen motorcycles, saying anyone found dealing in stolen property would face prosecution.
