The Nigerian military says troops conducting coordinated air and ground operations under Operation Fansan Yamma have neutralised more than 160 terrorists and recovered about 300 motorcycles across the North-West within the past week.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this on Saturday while giving an update on military operations across the country.
According to Onoja, the Air Component of Operation Fansan Yamma conducted an armed reconnaissance mission on August 9, 2026, over Sangeko and Baba-Doka areas of Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State after intelligence indicated the presence of a large group of terrorists, many of them travelling on motorcycles.
He said the aircraft engaged the terrorists with rockets and cannon fire, disrupting their movements. Initial reports indicated that about 120 bodies and 300 motorcycles were recovered from the area.
In another operation on August 13, troops conducted an air operation around Maburya in Mariga LGA after detecting terrorists moving with rustled cattle. The terrorists were subsequently engaged along the Kainji-Daban Woko axis, resulting in the neutralisation of 46 terrorists.
Operations in the North-East
In Borno State, troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised a terrorist at a hideout in Kaniram East, Abadam LGA, on August 7. Weapons, ammunition and other items were recovered before the hideout was destroyed.
Troops also confronted terrorists collecting illegal taxes from herders along the Gaba-Dzangola axis in Adamawa State, forcing them to withdraw and recovering weapons and ammunition.
The military arrested several suspected terrorist collaborators and logistics facilitators in Adamawa and Borno states. A suspected terrorist informant was also arrested at the Damboa Internally Displaced Persons camp in Borno.
The military said 19 people, including terrorist fighters, women, children and teenagers, surrendered to troops at various locations in Borno State. They reportedly cited food shortages, sustained military pressure and internal fighting among terrorist factions as reasons for leaving the groups.
Troops also rescued five female abductees near Amuda Bridge along the Ngoshe-Gava Road in Gwoza LGA after they escaped from a terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains.
18 Terrorists Killed in Kebbi
In Kebbi State, troops responding to a terrorist attack on Makuku Village in Sakaba LGA on August 10 neutralised 18 terrorists.
However, some members of local security outfits and a civilian were killed during the encounter.
In Zamfara State, the military also arrested two suspected terrorists believed to be foreign nationals and alleged IED experts.
₦5.3 Million Recovered in Zamfara
Troops arrested a suspected terrorist collaborator and logistics facilitator in Maradun, Zamfara State, on August 7 and recovered ₦5.302 million, allegedly intended for terrorist associates.
A follow-up operation led to another arrest, while efforts continued to apprehend other members of the network.
Troops also engaged terrorists around Magazu Village in Tsafe LGA, forcing them to abandon some kidnapped victims who were subsequently rescued.
In Kaduna and Kano states, troops arrested suspected terrorists and logistics suppliers, recovering items including camouflage uniforms, mobile phones, identification documents and ammunition.
25 Kidnap Victims Rescued in Kogi
In Kogi State, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, working with the police and local security personnel, rescued 16 kidnap victims along routes in Ofu LGA.
The victims comprised six men, six women and four children.
Another nine victims were rescued along the Ajaokuta-Itobe Road on August 11 after troops intercepted the kidnappers' vehicles and forced them to abandon their captives.
In Benue State, troops engaged armed assailants attacking residents in Azege village, Logo LGA. One armed assailant was killed and a rifle and ammunition were recovered.
Nine Kidnap Victims Rescued in Niger
Troops of Operation Savannah Shield rescued nine male kidnap victims in Mariga LGA of Niger State on August 12 following sustained operations against terrorists in the area.
In Kwara State, troops raided the residence of suspected terrorist collaborators in Latan Daji, Patigi LGA, arresting four suspects. An ambush operation in Majai and Tungan Bissalah villages also forced terrorists to withdraw, with troops recovering a rifle, ammunition and six motorcycles.
Military Intensifies Fight Against Crude Oil Theft
In the Niger Delta, troops of Operation Sentinel recovered about 24,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil from Bethel Community in Bonny LGA of Rivers State.
They also discovered an illegal refining site containing two pits and extensive hoses allegedly used for crude oil theft.
In another operation, troops intercepted a speedboat carrying about 17,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil along the Onne-Okrika waterways.
Additional concealed storage facilities containing about 60,000 litres and 45,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil were discovered along the Oteghele axis.
Kidnap Syndicate Dismantled in South-East
In the South-East, troops of Operation Udoka, working with the Department of State Services, made progress in dismantling a kidnapping syndicate operating across Enugu State and neighbouring areas.
Following the abduction of two people in Udi LGA on August 2, troops tracked the syndicate and ambushed its members on August 9.
One commander was neutralised while another sustained gunshot wounds while attempting to escape.
Troops recovered $1,600, ₦187,000, mobile phones and herbal medicine.
Another suspected member was arrested in Gariki, Enugu State, on August 10. Authorities recovered $1,000, ₦785,900 and other items from him.
Using the suspects as guides, troops later recovered four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of ammunition from a forest hideout.
Maj.-Gen. Onoja said all arrested suspects remained in custody and were undergoing interrogation to assist further investigations.
He said the military operations demonstrated the continued coordination and effectiveness of the Armed Forces in tackling terrorism, kidnapping, crude oil theft and other criminal activities.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, commended the troops and acknowledged the contributions of the DSS, Nigeria Police Force, local security groups and other agencies.
He assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces would remain committed to protecting lives and property and would continue operations until peace and stability are restored across the country.
