2.8 Million Children in Adamawa, Borno, Yobe Need Emergency Education Support

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdulrahman Haske, has raised concerns over the growing education crisis affecting children in Nigeria’s North-East.

Haske said about 2.8 million children across Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States require emergency education support, citing data from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

He disclosed this while speaking as a guest lecturer at a forum organised by the Adamawa State Government to commemorate International Youth Day 2026.

According to him, hundreds of schools in the three states remain closed, while many classrooms have been damaged or destroyed as a result of conflict and insecurity.

Haske said the situation was being worsened by poverty, displacement, insecurity and limited economic opportunities, which continue to affect the development of young people in the region.

He described the figures as a “wake-up call,” warning that the education crisis could have serious long-term consequences for employment, entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth.

> “These are not just statistics. These are our communities, our children and our future workforce,” Haske said.

He called for urgent investment in education, the reconstruction of damaged schools and uninterrupted access to learning for children affected by conflict.

Haske also urged governments to provide young Nigerians with greater opportunities to develop skills and participate in leadership and decision-making.

He warned that Nigeria could not afford to lose another generation to poverty, insecurity and lack of opportunities, stressing that urgent action was needed to address the education crisis in the North-East.
