Two of the 16 victims rescued from kidnappers in Kogi State have recounted their nearly 48-hour ordeal in captivity, revealing that the abductors spoke Igala, Fulani and Hausa.
The victims, identified as Ngozi Stephen and Joshua Daniel, were among commuters abducted on Sunday along the Ojuwo–Ajengo–Memarebo and Ojiwo–Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area.
They were rescued on Monday during a joint security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Navy, Police and local vigilantes along the Ajaokuta–Anyigba road.
According to Ngozi, the kidnappers used her as an interpreter because she speaks Hausa fluently. She said the abductors demanded ransoms ranging from N50 million to N100 million from different victims.
She said the kidnappers demanded N70 million from her family and threatened victims who could not meet their ransom demands.
Ngozi said the abductors confiscated their phones and laptops and only returned the phones when they wanted victims to contact their relatives about ransom payments.
She added that the kidnappers threatened to sell the victims to ritualists if their demands were not met.
The victims were eventually freed after the kidnappers fled upon hearing gunshots from the approaching security operatives. The abductors reportedly left behind bags containing the phones and laptops taken from the victims.
Daniel, another survivor, said he sustained a serious injury while attempting to escape from the kidnappers.
He explained that one of the abductors chased him and tried to attack him with a cutlass. While raising his hand to protect himself, he suffered a deep cut to his vein and continued bleeding through the night.
Daniel said he later used herbs on the wound, which helped stop the bleeding.
He also disclosed that one of the abductors identified himself as Peter and said the kidnappers deliberately spoke different languages so the victims would not understand their conversations.
Six male adults, six female adults and four children were among the 16 rescued victims. They are currently undergoing documentation, medical assessment and reunification with their families.
During the rescue operation, a local hunter was killed while a police officer sustained injuries.
Despite his own injury, Daniel said he helped carry the injured police officer from the kidnappers’ hideout to the main road for evacuation.
He expressed gratitude to the security operatives for rescuing the victims and commiserated with the family of the deceased hunter.
