Kazakhstan’s newly established pro-government Adilet party has won more than 71% of the vote in the country’s parliamentary election, according to the electoral commission.
The election, held on Sunday, saw 74% of eligible voters participate. Around 12.6 million people were eligible to vote out of Kazakhstan’s population of about 20 million.
Four other parties also secured seats in the new 145-member Kurultai, Kazakhstan’s newly established single-chamber parliament. They include the pro-business Respublika and Ak Zhol parties, the centre-left Nationwide Social Democratic Party, and the rural-focused Auyl party.
Adilet was formed earlier this year by political figures close to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and absorbed the former ruling party, Amanat. The other parties entering parliament are also generally considered supportive of Tokayev’s government.
The election followed the adoption of a new constitution that replaced Kazakhstan’s two-chamber parliament with a single legislative chamber. Authorities say the reform is intended to strengthen parliament’s role in political decision-making.
Kazakhstan’s Supreme Court recently ruled that the new constitution allows Tokayev to seek another seven-year presidential term. However, when asked about his political future after voting in Astana, Tokayev said it was too early to say whether he would run again.
The new constitution also created the position of vice president, and Tokayev said he would announce his choice for the post within seven to 10 days.
Tokayev, who has led Kazakhstan since 2019, has promoted a reform programme known as “Just Kazakhstan”, following deadly unrest in 2022 that left 238 people dead.
The election victory by Adilet is expected to further consolidate Tokayev’s political influence in the Central Asian country.
