Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has inaugurated a modern Sickle Cell Centre and a new office complex for the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.
During the event, the governor also launched the distribution of 300 customised digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political appointees. He further flagged off the distribution of free maternal healthcare supplies, Accident and Emergency commodities, and new hospital bed sheets at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in Kano.
Governor Yusuf said the newly established Sickle Cell Centre will provide free diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care, health education, and specialised medical services for people living with sickle cell disease.
He noted that the new disease control complex will improve Kano State's capacity to prevent, detect, and respond quickly to outbreaks of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, meningitis, and other epidemic-prone illnesses.
According to the governor, the digital blood pressure monitors were procured to encourage regular health checks among government officials and help reduce sudden deaths linked to hypertension through early detection and continuous monitoring.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration's commitment to sustaining free maternal healthcare and emergency medical support programmes, saying the initiatives have already saved thousands of lives across the state.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, said the disease control centre was conceived, completed, and commissioned under the current administration to strengthen disease surveillance and emergency response across Kano's 44 local government areas.
He added that the state's healthcare system has witnessed major improvements, revealing that maternal mortality has declined significantly from over 1,300 recorded cases in 2023 to about 300 in 2026 as a result of government interventions.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, described the governor's healthcare investments as a major boost to medical services, noting that thousands of residents will benefit from the improved infrastructure, equipment, and essential healthcare programmes.
The projects form part of the Kano State Government's ongoing efforts to expand access to specialised treatment, strengthen disease surveillance, improve maternal healthcare, and promote preventive medical services across the state.
