A 41-year-old Salvadoran man, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, has died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Delaney Hall detention centre in Newark, New Jersey.
According to ICE, Lopez-Cornejo suffered a medical emergency on Saturday and was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died. Authorities said the official cause of death is still under investigation.
His family and immigration advocates claim he had diabetes, high blood pressure and seizures, and allege that he was denied essential medication while in detention. ICE, however, maintains that he received appropriate medical care and that all detainees have access to emergency treatment.
The death marks the second reported detainee fatality at the Delaney Hall facility in less than a year, prompting renewed criticism from public officials and immigrant rights groups.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill called for a full investigation, with the governor again urging the closure of the detention centre. Representative Rob Menendez also raised concerns over medical care and detention conditions, saying ICE and its contractors must be held accountable.
Following the announcement of Lopez-Cornejo's death, protesters gathered outside the facility to hold a vigil and demand greater oversight of immigration detention centres in the United States.
