Kano Bans Patent Medicine Stores From Giving IV Fluids, Blood Transfusions

The Kano State Government has banned patent medicine stores across the state from administering intravenous (IV) fluids and conducting blood transfusions.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA), Khadijah Hussein-Sa’id, announced the directive during a sensitisation workshop for proprietors and medical directors of private health facilities.

She explained that patent medicine stores are legally classified as non-clinical retail outlets and are not authorised to perform invasive medical procedures, administer IV fluids or conduct blood transfusions.

According to her, any patent medicine store or unauthorised facility found carrying out the prohibited procedures will face immediate closure and other sanctions under relevant laws.

She said IV therapy and blood transfusions must only be carried out in accredited healthcare facilities under the supervision of qualified medical professionals.

Hussein-Sa’id urged residents to report patent medicine stores engaging in the practices to PHIMA, advising complainants to provide evidence such as photographs, receipts or other proof.

The agency said the measure is aimed at protecting residents, curbing unsafe medical practices and improving standards across private healthcare facilities in Kano.
