The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing new measures to strengthen the regulation of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.
The bill was approved during Monday's plenary after lawmakers adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which held public hearings and consulted key stakeholders before presenting its recommendations.
Speaking after the bill's passage, Speaker Ismail Falgore praised members of the Assembly for their commitment throughout the legislative process. He described the amendment as a major step toward improving the administration and oversight of private schools in Kano State.
One of the key provisions of the new law is the creation of the office of the Executive Secretary to enhance the effective management of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Board.
The legislation also requires private and voluntary schools to obtain official approval before increasing tuition fees or other charges. The measure is aimed at protecting parents and guardians from arbitrary fee increases while ensuring that any proposed adjustments are subject to regulatory review.
Lawmakers said the amendment reflects the outcome of extensive consultations with education stakeholders and is expected to promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in the management of private educational institutions across Kano State.
