A community activist in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Bala Nuhu Kafanchan, has reportedly been arrested and detained after questioning the distribution of fertiliser supplied by the Kaduna State Government to farmers in Jema’a Local Government Area.
Nuhu was reportedly arrested on Wednesday night after posting concerns on Facebook about alleged differences in the quality and quantity of fertiliser being distributed to farmers in the area.
According to a source who spoke to SaharaReporters, Nuhu was taken to the Kafanchan Area Command after the Jema’a Local Government Chairman, Peter Tanko, allegedly ordered security personnel to arrest him.
The activist had reportedly shared photographs comparing fertiliser said to have been supplied by Governor Uba Sani with another batch being distributed to farmers.
In his post, Nuhu questioned the fairness of the distribution and asked whether the fertiliser allocated by the state government had been exhausted. He also raised concerns over claims that old or lower-quality fertiliser was being distributed in its place.
Nuhu further questioned the allocation of fertiliser trucks among communities, pointing out that Kafanchan, Godogodo and Jagindi Gidan Waya, which have nine wards combined, reportedly received four trucks, while Kagoma, with three wards, allegedly received three trucks.
A source also alleged that the fertiliser being distributed was of a lower grade than the product originally supplied by the governor. The source claimed that fertiliser allegedly worth about ₦60,000 per unit was being replaced with another product reportedly purchased for around ₦25,000.
The allegations have not been independently verified.
Nuhu reportedly said his intention was not to cause conflict but to draw attention to what he described as irregularities and demand fairness, honesty and transparency in the distribution process.
He also appealed to political leaders from the Kafanchan area to intervene and ensure that farmers receive the fertiliser allocated to them by the state government.
As of the time of the report, it was unclear what offence Nuhu had allegedly committed. Efforts to contact the Jema’a Local Government Chairman, Peter Tanko, for his response were reportedly unsuccessful.
The allegations surrounding the fertiliser distribution and Nuhu’s detention remain subject to further clarification from the relevant authorities.
