At least 24 suspected bandits were killed on Tuesday after Nigerian Army troops, Department of State Services (DSS) operatives and local vigilantes foiled an attempted mass kidnapping in Gidan Bawa village, Kandarawa Ward, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
According to a security source, the operation was launched following intelligence that about 40 armed men loyal to notorious bandit leader Isiya Kwashen Garwa were planning to invade the community and abduct residents, particularly women and children.
The attackers were reportedly planning to carry out a large-scale abduction similar to the recent incident in Woro community, Kwara State.
Acting on the intelligence, DSS operatives mobilised members of the Katsina Community Watch Corps and the Civilian Joint Task Force from Guga camp to confront the bandits.
During the operation, security personnel reportedly killed 24 of the attackers and rescued villagers who had been abducted.
The security forces also recovered 19 stolen cattle from the community.
Efforts were ongoing to locate and apprehend the fleeing bandits, the source added.
