More than 600 participants are expected to attend the 2026 Annual National Conference of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), which begins on Friday in Umuahia, Abia State.
The conference, themed “Faith, Resilience and Responsibility: Muslim Women Responding to Challenges,” will bring together Muslim women leaders, scholars, professionals, entrepreneurs, youth representatives, policymakers and community stakeholders from across Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists in Umuahia on Thursday, FOMWAN’s 11th National Amirah, Dr. Sumaye Fadimatu Hamza, said the conference would address major challenges facing Nigerians, including insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, social divisions, climate change and humanitarian crises.
Hamza said the current situation required collective responsibility, resilience and purposeful leadership, stressing that Muslim women should respond to difficulties with compassion, innovation and constructive action.
She explained that the conference would provide an opportunity for participants to discuss issues such as women’s role in peacebuilding, education, economic empowerment, family stability, security, climate change, humanitarian assistance and youth mentorship.
According to her, the discussions are expected to produce practical recommendations that would help strengthen families, communities and institutions.
FOMWAN also called for greater investment in education and skills development, women’s empowerment, youth mentorship, peacebuilding, climate adaptation and humanitarian support.
The organisation further urged stronger collaboration among government agencies, civil society groups and other stakeholders to address the challenges affecting vulnerable Nigerians and promote sustainable development.
