Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has approved an additional ₦148.762 million monthly subvention for Gombe State University to support the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tool Allowance (CATA), beginning in October 2026.
The approval is aimed at addressing concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and implementing provisions arising from the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, said the additional funding represents a 56 per cent increase in the university’s monthly subvention. He explained that the money would enable the institution to make adequate financial provisions for the enhanced salary structure.
The additional allocation is expected to be included in the state’s 2026 supplementary budget, which the State House of Assembly is expected to consider in September.
Governor Yahaya also directed the university management to begin processes for the payment of outstanding CATA arrears owed to staff.
The government further directed the university to explore internal measures for gradually settling other outstanding obligations, including arrears relating to the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards, minimum wage and Earned Academic Allowances.
The development follows an ultimatum issued by the university’s ASUU branch over funding and staff welfare concerns.
The state government also announced that the Gombe State House of Assembly had passed legislation establishing the Gombe State Education Trust Fund, with operations expected to begin in October 2026.
According to the government, the fund will provide a more sustainable financing framework for education, particularly Gombe State University and other state-owned tertiary institutions.
The administration appealed to ASUU and other stakeholders to support efforts to maintain industrial harmony and ensure the continued stability and development of the university.
