Jigawa State has marked the 35th anniversary of its creation, honouring its founding fathers, former leaders, traditional rulers and citizens whose contributions have shaped the state’s development.
The state was created on August 27, 1991, by the Federal Military Government under the leadership of then Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, following its separation from the old Kano State. Dutse was designated as the state capital.
In a statement commemorating the anniversary, Governor Umar Namadi thanked Almighty Allah for His guidance, mercy and protection over Jigawa and its people. He described the anniversary as an occasion for thanksgiving, remembrance, reflection and renewed commitment to the state’s development.
Governor Namadi paid tribute to the founding fathers, elder statesmen, community leaders, public servants, professionals, women and youth leaders, civil society organisations, development partners and other stakeholders who contributed to the creation and growth of Jigawa State.
He also acknowledged the contributions of successive military administrators and civilian governors, including Major-General Olayinka Sule, Alhaji Ali Sa’ad Birnin-Kudu, Brigadier General Ibrahim Aliyu, Colonel Rasheed Alade Shekoni, Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Zakariya Maimalari, Alhaji Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, Alhaji Sule Lamido and Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.
The governor further commended former deputy governors, legislators, judges, commissioners, heads of service, permanent secretaries, local government leaders and civil servants for their various contributions to the state.
He recognised traditional institutions across the Hadejia, Kazaure, Gumel, Ringim and Dutse emirates, as well as district, village and ward heads, Islamic scholars and community leaders for their roles in preserving the state’s heritage, promoting peace and connecting government with the people.
Namadi said Jigawa’s progress over the past 35 years had also been driven by farmers, traders, teachers, health workers, artisans, scholars, entrepreneurs, security personnel, religious leaders and public officers.
He said the best way to honour the state’s founding fathers and past leaders was to uphold the values of peace, justice, opportunity, protection of public resources, care for vulnerable citizens, respect for elders and investment in the younger generation.
The governor urged residents to use the anniversary as an opportunity to “honour yesterday, serve today and prepare for tomorrow,” while renewing their commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous, inclusive and knowledge-driven Jigawa.
He also appealed for continued support and understanding from the people as his administration pursues its development agenda focused on sustainable development, socioeconomic wellbeing, peace and prosperity.
Governor Namadi concluded by appreciating the state’s founding fathers, past leaders, traditional rulers, elder statesmen, civil servants and citizens at home and abroad, while praying for Allah’s continued blessings on Jigawa State and Nigeria.
