The Federal Government has announced that 668,000 electricity meters have been deployed and installed at customers’ premises across Nigeria as part of efforts to reduce estimated billing.
The government said about 60% of active electricity customers are now metered, according to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.
The announcement followed the second meeting of the National Council on Privatisation for 2026, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The metering programme is being implemented under Phase 1 of the $500 million World Bank-financed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme, alongside the Presidential Metering Initiative.
The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Ayodeji Ariyo Gbeleyi, said 668,000 meters had been installed out of the 1,033,000 meters delivered under the programme.
He explained that the initiative is intended to close Nigeria’s electricity metering gap and reduce arbitrary estimated electricity bills for registered customers.
Gbeleyi also disclosed that about 17 states have established State Electricity Regulatory Commissions since April 2024 following the implementation of the Electricity Act.
Akwa Ibom State became one of the latest states to establish its own electricity regulatory commission in July.
However, Gbeleyi said some aspects of the Electricity Act still require adjustments. The council therefore directed key stakeholders, including the Attorney-General of the Federation, Minister of Power, NERC and BPE, to work together on proposed amendments to the law.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, said the government was working to ensure Nigerians receive better value from electricity and other important sectors of the economy.
