Bandits Target Relief Beneficiaries in Sokoto, Kill Four

Four people have been killed and four others abducted after bandits attacked Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The attack occurred at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, just six days after a boat accident in the community claimed the lives of 65 people, many of them children.

The attackers reportedly went from house to house searching for families who had received a ₦1 million relief donation from the Sokoto State Government following the boat disaster.

The village head of Gorau, Alhaji Aliyu Magaji Na-Batsami, said the bandits broke into rooms in his residence while demanding to know where the relief money had been kept.

According to him, 11 residents were shot, with four dying instantly and seven others taken to hospital for treatment. Four additional residents were abducted during the attack.

The victims who were killed were identified as Bashar Sani, Ila Malam Makeri, Isa Ibrahim and Ali Aminu.

The traditional ruler said the death toll could have been higher because security operatives responded quickly, arriving in four vehicles and pursuing the attackers.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of families affected by the recent boat tragedy and the security of financial assistance provided to them.

The Sokoto State Government had announced ₦1 million for each family of the 65 victims, along with the distribution of grains to support those affected by the disaster.
