Israeli security forces intensified operations in the occupied West Bank village of Tal on Friday as more than 100 Israeli settlers marched toward the community, amid heightened tensions following a deadly confrontation a week earlier.
According to Palestinian residents, Israeli forces wounded at least one Palestinian, arrested at least three others, and sealed off entrances to the village during the operation. Local officials also said dozens of residents remain in Israeli custody following a series of military raids conducted over the past week.
Witnesses told Reuters that some settlers entered Palestinian properties and removed goods while Israeli soldiers were present. Residents also reported that a local cemetery was vandalized, with several gravestones damaged. Reuters journalists who visited the site observed broken headstones, while the Israeli military said it had received reports of the vandalism and was investigating.
The Israeli military stated that its troops were deployed to disperse the settlers and evacuate them from the area. However, Palestinian residents alleged that soldiers did not intervene to stop acts of vandalism and instead facilitated the settlers' movement by blocking roads and using crowd-control measures against Palestinians.
The latest unrest follows last week's violence in the same area, in which four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government described the incident as terrorism, while Palestinian residents said they were defending themselves from attacks by armed settlers.
The West Bank has experienced a sharp increase in settler-related violence over the past three years, drawing concern from the United Nations and many countries. Most of the international community considers Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal under international law, a position Israel disputes.
Palestinians seek the West Bank as the foundation of a future independent state, while Israel maintains that the territory is disputed and rejects the characterization that it is under occupation.
The situation in Tal remains tense as military operations continue and concerns grow over the potential for further violence.
