Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has said Tehran must develop plans to overcome what he described as “unjust sanctions,” as the United States prepares to impose tougher economic measures against Iran.
Qalibaf made the comments on Friday, a day after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced what he called the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran. Bessent said details of the new measures would be announced on Monday.
Qalibaf, one of Iran’s most influential political figures and a key negotiator in talks with Washington, said economic development and national security were closely connected.
He accused the United States and Israel of using economic and “cognitive” warfare against Iran after failing to defeat the country through direct military confrontation.
Speaking to Iranian and Iraqi business representatives in Baghdad, Qalibaf said Muslim countries possessed significant natural resources that their enemies sought to exploit.
He also called for stronger economic cooperation between Iran and Iraq, including the use of their national currencies for bilateral trade in an effort to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar.
The comments come as Washington increases economic pressure on Tehran, with the new sanctions expected to further affect Iran’s economy and trade.
