The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially published Senator Shehu Buba Umar as the governorship candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) for the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election.
The development has brought an end to the controversy surrounding the party’s governorship ticket following Buba’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PRP.
After Buba emerged as the PRP candidate, another aspirant, Safiyanu Gambo, went to court to challenge his emergence as the party’s flag bearer.
However, INEC’s publication of the candidates’ particulars, in accordance with Section 29(3) of the 2026 Electoral Act, has now confirmed Buba’s candidacy. The commission also published the name of his running mate and the PRP’s candidates for the Bauchi State House of Assembly.
Reacting to the development, Buba expressed relief that the dispute over his candidacy had been resolved.
“Praise be to Allah. The issue surrounding the authenticity of my candidature, that of my deputy and the PRP candidates for the State House of Assembly has now been put to rest,” he said.
He called on PRP members and supporters to unite and concentrate on issues affecting the people of Bauchi State.
Buba also pledged that his campaign would be issue-based, promising that if elected governor, his administration would focus on public welfare and a development-oriented agenda.
The INEC confirmation is expected to provide greater clarity for the PRP as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 Bauchi governorship election.
