Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, says the committee that developed Nigeria's proposed state police framework examined policing systems in India, the United States, and Pakistan before submitting its recommendations.
Speaking at a workshop on state policing in Abuja on Thursday, Disu said the committee carried out extensive comparative research to design a practical model suited to Nigeria's security needs.
He explained that the workshop was organised to educate senior police officers on the proposed state police structure and address concerns surrounding its implementation.
According to the IGP, the Federal Government has resolved to establish state police, and the Nigeria Police Force is committed to supporting the process.
Disu revealed that although the Nigeria Governors' Forum had already concluded its own work on state policing, the police committee completed its framework within 17 days, and the document has become a key reference in ongoing discussions.
He added that retired Inspectors-General of Police also reviewed the proposal and made valuable recommendations to strengthen the framework.
The IGP urged participants at the workshop to critically examine the draft and contribute ideas that would help create an effective state policing system capable of improving security across the country.
The push for state police has gained momentum amid growing concerns over insecurity and increasing calls for a decentralised policing structure in Nigeria.
