Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing a police inspector and seven civilians.
The attack reportedly occurred on Monday night when the gunmen invaded the community, set two houses on fire and killed eight people.
The Chairman of Hong Local Government Area, Aliyu Sa’ad, confirmed the incident, saying security agencies had been deployed to the area to track down the attackers and restore calm.
“The attackers came on the night of Monday and launched a bloody attack on two houses, burnt the houses and killed one police officer and seven civilians during the attack,” Sa’ad said.
The Adamawa State Police Command also confirmed the attack.
The command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, said five bodies—four civilians and a police inspector—had been recovered after the attackers left the area.
He added that the police were awaiting further updates as troops, vigilantes, hunters and other security agencies continued efforts to locate the perpetrators.
The latest incident adds to the growing security concerns in Hong Local Government Area, which has experienced repeated attacks linked to insurgency in recent months.
Residents in parts of Adamawa continue to face threats from Boko Haram and other armed groups operating around communities bordering the Sambisa Forest.
The local government chairman also disclosed that a proposed military barracks at Garaha, near a major route used by insurgents accessing the Sambisa Forest, is yet to begin operations.
Security agencies are expected to continue their search for those responsible for the attack while efforts are being made to restore normalcy in the affected community.
