Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has warned the newly sworn-in chairmen of the state’s 20 local government areas against misappropriating or diverting public funds.
The governor gave the warning on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Government House in Bauchi.
Mohammed said the financial autonomy granted to local governments had placed greater responsibility on council chairmen to provide effective and accountable leadership at the grassroots.
He urged the new chairmen to see their positions as an opportunity to serve the people rather than a means of personal enrichment.
According to the governor, residents now expect better performance from local government officials because of their closeness to the people.
He directed the chairmen to prioritise security, education, healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure in their respective councils.
Mohammed also urged them to work closely with traditional rulers, security agencies, women, youths and other stakeholders to promote peace and development.
The governor further instructed the council chairmen to hold regular security meetings with relevant agencies and ensure that important information is promptly communicated to authorities.
He congratulated the newly elected officials and charged them to begin work immediately, noting that their performance would be closely monitored by both the government and the people.
The governor also administered the oath of office to six newly appointed special advisers, urging them to work diligently towards achieving the administration’s objectives.
The Allied Peoples Movement reportedly won all 20 chairmanship seats and 319 councillorship seats in the recent Bauchi State local government elections, according to the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission.
