A Nigerian woman from Gombe State, Maryam Danazimi Ibrahim, has won the Female Tafsir category at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Competition for the Memorisation, Recitation and Interpretation of the Holy Qur’an in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Danazimi emerged first in the second category and received a prize of 300,000 Saudi Riyals, equivalent to approximately ₦120 million.
The category was open to contestants who had memorised the entire Qur’an, demonstrated excellent recitation and Tajweed, and possessed knowledge of the interpretation of Qur’anic vocabulary.
She was among 50 winners selected across five categories, with 25 male and 25 female contestants. The competition attracted 334 participants from 133 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
The 46th edition was also historic as it marked the first time female contestants participated in the international Qur’anic competition.
The Saudi government distributed a total of 10.26 million Saudi Riyals in prize money to winners across the five categories.
In the female second category, Danazimi took the top prize of SAR300,000, followed by contestants from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia who received SAR275,000, SAR250,000, SAR235,000 and SAR220,000 respectively.
The competition featured different levels of Qur’an memorisation, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation, including mastery of the seven canonical readings and memorisation of five, 15 or the entire Qur’an.
The event was organised by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, with the final rounds held in the holy city of Makkah.
