The Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (GIRS) has arrested two individuals suspected of illegally collecting taxes and other revenues across the state using Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals.
The suspects were arrested during a targeted operation carried out by the agency’s Intelligence Department.
According to GIRS, preliminary investigations showed that the suspects were collecting revenue in Gombe State while issuing receipts bearing the name of Jigawa State.
Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to security agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Executive Chairman of GIRS, Aisha Adamu, condemned the alleged activities, describing them as an unacceptable violation capable of undermining the state’s revenue system.
> “This is an unacceptable act that could undermine the state’s revenue system,” Adamu said.
She commended the agency’s Intelligence Department, Internal Control and Monitoring Team, as well as security personnel, for their vigilance in protecting public funds.
GIRS also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspected fraudulent revenue collectors or unauthorised POS revenue collection to the appropriate authorities.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working with security agencies to dismantle illegal revenue collection networks and safeguard Gombe State’s internally generated revenue.
