Fresh Bandit Attack in Sokoto Claims Cleric, 10 Villagers Abducted

At least 10 residents have been abducted and an Islamic teacher killed after armed bandits attacked Gidan Kare village in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to residents, the attackers stormed the community around 8 a.m. on Thursday after villagers returned from Tureta town, where many had been spending nights to escape bandit attacks.

The attackers reportedly opened fire on the residents, killing one person, injuring another and abducting at least 10 people. The injured victim was identified as Dan Abu, while the deceased Islamic teacher was identified as Mallam Abubakar Danjimme.

Among those reportedly abducted were Mallam Dan Manga, Shehu, twins Hassana and Hussaina, Badaru, two children of Mallam Ayuba, Saratu and two others.

Residents said the attackers appeared to have monitored the movement of villagers. They reportedly hid inside a primary school and waited until many residents had returned before launching the attack.

The attackers also reportedly entered nearby Daddade and Janwake communities but found few or no residents because many people had already fled their homes due to insecurity.

Residents expressed concern that more people could be missing and called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect communities in the area and prevent armed groups from operating from surrounding forests.

The Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said he would contact the Divisional Police Officer in Tureta for more information, but no further response had been received when the report was filed.
