China has temporarily suspended rescue operations in Tibet after authorities warned of the risk of renewed flooding in an area where hundreds of people remain missing following a deadly mudslide.
The mudslide struck the China-Nepal border area near Gyirong on Wednesday, leaving widespread destruction and prompting major rescue efforts.
According to Chinese state media, a lake created by huge amounts of mud and debris has begun overflowing toward the area where rescue teams were operating. Authorities have therefore ordered rescue teams to remain on standby and instructed emergency workers who had reached the affected area to withdraw about one kilometre.
Officials warned that water levels in the newly formed lake could continue rising over the next three days because of ongoing rainfall, with the highest levels expected around September 1.
Authorities said the situation could lead to a possible breach of the lake, sending large amounts of floodwater downstream and potentially causing further damage to Gyirong Port and other areas.
Emergency engineering teams are closely monitoring the lake and the surrounding conditions.
As of Friday, Chinese authorities said 499 Chinese nationals and 555 foreign nationals had been evacuated from the disaster zone.
Rescue teams are using drones, 3D modelling, thermal imaging and manual searches to locate people who are still missing.
The operation remains suspended while authorities assess the flooding risk and determine when it will be safe for rescue workers to return.
