Chad Accuses Sudan of Deadly Air Strike Near Shared Border

Chad has accused Sudan’s military of carrying out an air strike near their shared border that killed at least 12 people and injured seven others.

According to a Chadian security source, the attack on Thursday targeted a fuel market used by fighters from Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The incident comes amid Sudan’s prolonged civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, which has displaced millions of people.

Chad previously accused Sudan of conducting an air strike more than 100km inside Chadian territory in the eastern Ennedi region. No Chadian casualties were reported in that incident.

Following drone threats, Chad raised its security alert to its highest level and deployed about 100 armoured vehicles and signal-jamming trucks near Tine, close to the Sudanese border.

Sudan rejected the accusations, saying it was surprised by the claims before any professional and independent investigation had established what happened. Its Foreign Ministry said the Sudanese army was defending the country’s sovereignty and security while respecting the sovereignty of neighbouring states.

The United States embassy in Khartoum also accused the Sudanese army of carrying out the recent strikes and condemned the attacks.

Sudan has previously accused Chad of supporting or being aligned with the RSF, while Chad is currently hosting nearly one million Sudanese refugees who have fled the ongoing conflict.
