First Batch of US Deportees Arrives in Liberia

Twenty migrants deported from the United States have arrived in Liberia, marking the first group of up to 1,200 foreign nationals the West African country has agreed to receive.

The migrants arrived at Liberia’s international airport in Monrovia on Thursday afternoon and were taken away by bus under the supervision of Liberian officials.

Liberia recently agreed to accept deportees from the US as part of an arrangement linked to President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The Liberian government said the deportees would be free to leave the country whenever they wished or apply for asylum. It also stated that it had not received any payment or promised rewards for participating in the programme.

The latest development comes as the Trump administration expands its deportation policy to include migrants who previously had legal protections allowing them to remain and work in the United States.
