An 18-year-old Australian woman, Lily Hooper, has been found dead in bushland in New South Wales, Australia, eight days after she went missing during a hike in Nattai National Park.
Hooper left her home in Sydney on August 12 to go for a walk in the national park but failed to return that night. Her family reported her missing, and her car was later found near a walking trail in the park.
A major search operation involving NSW Police, emergency services, the Rural Fire Service, National Parks and Wildlife Service, and Australian Defence Force personnel was launched.
Police found Hooper’s body at about 11:30 a.m. on Thursday in dense bushland in the Southern Highlands. Although the body had not yet been formally identified, police said they believed it was that of the missing teenager.
The discovery was followed by confusion after New South Wales Premier Chris Minns initially told parliament that Hooper had been found alive. He later corrected the statement and apologised to her family, saying he had received incorrect information and genuinely believed he was announcing good news.
Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon also apologised to the family, saying the miscommunication occurred after officers became excited when they believed Hooper had been found alive.
Police said Hooper’s parents were mistakenly led to believe their daughter was alive for about eight to 10 minutes before they received the correct information.
Efforts to recover her body by helicopter were unsuccessful because of the difficult terrain and dense tree canopy. Police said they would continue efforts to retrieve her body manually or on foot.
Authorities are preparing a report for the coroner, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Hooper’s death.
